Q: Who needs a computer network?

A: Any home or business with more than one computer!

Your computer is probably connected to a printer, a hard drive and a modem, among other devices. These accessories allow you to print reports, store important files and connect with others on the internet. If you add a second computer, you'll also need a second modem, printer and external hard drive as shown below.

In contrast, by networking two or more computers, your system becomes more efficient by sharing some of these devices. Connecting your computers with some simple cables and a hub or switch allows you to gain improvements such as sharing important files, sharing a connection to the internet and sharing a printer.

You can also set up a network "back up drive," simply another hard drive that backs up all your data automatically every night, or however often you deem necessary.
